A particularly special Rolex Datejust reference 1601 from 1972, professionally restored to an exceptional standard and featuring a beautiful and highly unusual no-lume Sigma dial.
The silver dial is the defining feature of this watch. It is signed “σ T SWISS T σ” at 6 o’clock, identifying it as a Sigma dial, a detail associated with the use of precious-metal components on the dial. More unusually, this example has no luminous material to either the baton hour markers or hands, giving it an exceptionally clean and elegant appearance. The dial is in mint restored condition, with crisp black printing, applied Rolex coronet and beautifully finished baton markers.
The 36mm stainless-steel Oyster case has been professionally refinished, while the 18ct white-gold fluted bezel has been recut to restore the sharp definition of its original fluting. The overall result is an exceptionally clean vintage Datejust.
Its genuine Rolex Jubilee bracelet has also been professionally repinned, dramatically reducing the stretch normally associated with bracelets of this age. It currently fits a wrist of approximately 19cm and presents beautifully with the restored case.
As a reference 1601, it retains the classic features that make the four-digit Datejust so appealing: 36mm proportions, acrylic Cyclops crystal, fluted precious-metal bezel and the distinctive vintage dial architecture.
The watch is accompanied by a period-correct Rolex presentation box, matching outer box and Datejust booklet, completing an excellent package.
