Rolex datejust ref. 16014

1978 serial

Fresh service

Bracelet repinned, so no sag at all, c.19.5cm

A really strong Rolex Datejust 16014 from 1978, with one of the best dials you’ll see on this reference. The silver etched dial gives the watch a lot more life than a standard flat silver dial, catching the light properly and changing character depending on angle. It’s still unmistakably a Datejust, just a slightly more interesting one in the metal.

The dial is in mint condition. Printing is crisp, markers are sharp. The white gold fluted bezel frames it perfectly and gives the watch the right amount of presence without overdoing it.

The case is in excellent overall condition and presents exactly as you’d want a good 16014 to present. Strong lines, clean lugs, and no softness to the shape. It feels like a watch that’s been looked after rather than endlessly messed about with. Acrylic crystal with cyclops as it should be. 36mm exc crown.

It has just had a fresh service and is running perfectly. The bracelet has also been repinned, which makes a real difference on these. It now feels tight and substantial on the wrist, without the sag you so often get on tired Jubilee bracelets from this period. Total bracelet length is approximately 19.5cm.

The 16014 sits in a nice place in the Datejust line. You get the later quickset movement era and the white gold fluted bezel, but still with all the charm of an acrylic-crystal vintage Rolex.
