Omega Pontife, 1939, 30T2, 35mm
This is a museum piece. An Omega Pontife dating to 1939, powered by the legendary 30T2 manual wind movement.
A serial from this year places it right at the very beginning of 30T2 production, making this an early example of one of Omega’s most important calibres. Early Pontife pieces like this don’t surface often, particularly in this larger jumbo case size, and it’s one of those watches that immediately feels different in the hand — thin, beautifully balanced and unmistakably pre-war in character.
This is the only one of its kind on the market today.
The clean, highly legible dial layout, subsidiary seconds and robust movement architecture all point towards practicality rather than decoration, which is exactly what makes these early pieces so appealing today.
The dial is fully original and wonderfully honest, with even ageing throughout, crisp printing, applied markers and the correct Pontife handset with subsidiary seconds. Nothing has been over-restored or dressed up, which is exactly what you want to see on a watch of this age. The case remains sharp with only surface marks commensurate with age, clearly well looked after across its life. A new acrylic crystal has just been fitted, keeping the profile correct while presenting the dial cleanly.
The watch measures a strong 35mm excluding the crown, which is genuinely large for a late-1930s piece and wears beautifully on the wrist without feeling bulky. It sits on a quality leather strap and presents exactly as you’d hope a proper vintage Omega should along with an Omega style buckle.
The crown is original, matching the copper dots on the dial.
The 30T2 movement is clean, original and has just been serviced. It’s running well and keeping time within a few seconds a day, with good amplitude and stable performance. These movements are rightly regarded as some of Omega’s finest early calibres and are a big part of why these watches remain so collectible today.
