IWC Schaffhausen, Cal. 89, 18ct, c.1954

£2,000.00
sold out

A beautifully strong mid century jumbo IWC, housed in a larger than standard solid 18ct gold case with teardrop lugs. This is exactly the sort of piece that shows why IWC built its reputation on movement quality and restrained case design, everything here is considered, balanced and properly executed.

The case measures approximately 36.5mm excluding crown, firmly in jumbo territory for the period, and it wears accordingly. The teardrop lugs give it real elegance, adding shape without overcomplicating the design. Condition is excellent, with the gold case remaining sharp and well defined, no heavy wear, no loss of form, just a clean, well preserved example.

The dial is classic IWC. Clean, minimal and perfectly proportioned, with applied markers and a subtle outer minute track. It remains in stunning condition, with a crisp surface and no distractions. Exactly the sort of dial that works with a case like this.

The crown is correct and sits neatly within the profile, maintaining the balance of the watch.

Inside is the calibre 89 manual wind movement, one of IWC’s most respected calibres. Known for its robustness, accuracy and longevity, it is a movement that collectors actively seek out. This example is running well, with the kind of build quality you feel immediately when winding and setting.

The serial dates the watch to circa 1954, placing it right in the heart of IWC’s post war production, a period widely regarded as one of their strongest.

It is fitted to an aftermarket brown crocodile effect leather strap, which suits the warmth of the gold case well and keeps the watch very wearable.
