Audemars Piguet 18ct Ultra-Slim, Cal. 2003, c.1960s
A beautifully understated vintage Audemars Piguet, housed in an elegant 18ct solid yellow gold case and powered by the legendary ultra-thin Calibre 2003. Measuring 33.5mm excluding the crown, this is a timeless dress watch that perfectly captures the restrained elegance for which Audemars Piguet became renowned during the 1960s.
The attractive sunburst gold dial has developed honest patination over the years, giving the watch warmth and character without detracting from its clean, minimalist appearance. Applied gold baton hour markers and slim matching hands complete the classic aesthetic.
Inside is the celebrated manually wound Audemars Piguet Calibre 2003, one of the finest ultra-thin movements of its era. Based on the Jaeger-LeCoultre Calibre 803, it measures just 1.64mm thick, making it one of the thinnest mechanical movements ever produced at the time. It was finished and regulated by Audemars Piguet to exceptionally high standards and represents a period when the finest Swiss maisons often shared extraordinary movement architecture while applying their own exacting finishing and quality control. Today, the Cal. 2003 is regarded as one of the defining ultra-thin dress watch movements of the twentieth century.
The 18ct solid gold case remains in very good condition with crisp lines and honest signs of careful wear. The caseback is correctly hallmarked 18K 0.750 and retains its original engine-turned interior finish. The crown is an unsigned replacement, while the watch is fitted to a quality aftermarket leather strap with aftermarket buckle.
Running well and presenting beautifully, this is an elegant and increasingly sought-after example from one of the Holy Trinity of Swiss watchmaking.
