Rolex Datejust 1601, 18ct Fluted Bezel, 1978
• Rolex Oyster Perpetual Datejust ref. 1601
• Original pie pan stepped gold etched dial
• 18ct yellow gold fluted bezel
• Freshly serviced and running well
• Case in near mint condition with sharp edges
This is a Rolex Oyster Perpetual Datejust ref. 1601 from the 1970s, one of the most collected and recognisable Datejust references ever made.
The 1601 sits right in the sweet spot of vintage Rolex, pairing the classic 18ct fluted bezel with the earlier pie pan dial that disappeared on later references. These were the watches that cemented the Datejust as Rolex’s everyday icon — waterproof Oyster case, automatic movement, built to be worn daily.
The dial is the original pie pan stepped gold dial with etched texture. It’s aged nicely, with a soft, even tone and clean printing. These etched dials have a lot more depth in the metal than standard sunburst dials and are getting harder to find in untouched condition. It has real presence on the wrist, especially in natural light.
The case is in near mint condition with incredible sharp edges still present. It hasn’t been over polished and retains good definition to the lugs and fluted bezel. The caseback sticker from the last service remains on the rear.
Freshly serviced and running well, keeping perfect time on the timegrapher. Winding and setting are smooth.
Fitted with a new aftermarket brown leather strap and Rolex style buckle as shown. No box or papers included.
